Session budgets when the open is chaotic

Field note

Session budgets when the open is chaotic

A weekly loss cap is useless if the first hour can spend it twice. How to set a session budget that survives a noisy open.

Index and FX opens can print ranges that look like full-day moves by mid-morning. Traders without a session budget treat each idea as independent. By lunch the weekly plan is already compromised.

A session budget is a hard cap on losses for that window — separate from the weekly cap. When it is spent, discretionary trading stops even if “one more setup” appears. The weekly budget still matters; the session budget exists so one chaotic open cannot spend the week.

In practice we ask traders to define:

  • Maximum R spent before noon
  • Maximum number of ideas attempted
  • A rule for gaps that skip the planned stop (often: flatten and reassess, do not chase a “make-up” trade)

None of this predicts the open. It constrains how much capital the open is allowed to take. That constraint is the core of risk management for chart-based trading when structure is temporarily unreliable.
